Combined with it's neighbouring boroughs of North and South Tyneside and Gateshead, the city of Newcastle Upon Tyne is the largest in the region, home to nearly a million Geordies.
The Tyne itself has been the source of much of the city's wealth, it's docks being used for both the import/ export trade and ship building during the industrial boom of the 19th century.
These days Newcastle has the air of a work in progress, with huge regeneration projects underway all along the Tyne and in Gateshead, the most famous of which being the beautiful tilting Millennium Bridge - a perfect counterpoint to the classic image of the city, the Tyne Bridge.
Famed for the exuberant nature of their fans, the city's Premiership team, Newcastle United FC have fallen on comparatively hard times of late - they are yet to win this season - a situation which it is hoped will be resolved by the recent arrival of England striker Michael Owen.
